राष्ट्रीय चुनाव आयोग ने पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी के 'विश्वसनीय' पुलिस प्रमुख और राज्य पुलिस महानिदेशक राजीव कुमार को हटा दिया है। आयोग पहले ही चुनाव कार्यक्रम की घोषणा कर चुका है. आचार संहिता लागू हो गई है. उस वक्त राजीव कुमार को हटाने के फैसले पर काफी हंगामा हुआ था. आयोग ने राज्य को शाम 5 बजे तक तीन व्यक्तियों को डीजी के रूप में नामित करने को कहा। चुनाव आयोग ने कई अन्य राज्यों के गृह सचिवों को भी हटा दिया है.
संयोग से, राजीव कुमार पिछले दिसंबर में राज्य पुलिस के महानिदेशक बने थे। राजीव कुमार ने मनोज मालवीय के स्थान पर डीजी के रूप में कार्यभार संभाला था। 1989 बैच के आईपीएस अधिकारी राजीव कुमार पहले राज्य के इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स और सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी विभाग के प्रधान सचिव थे।
इससे पहले राजीव कुमार ने कोलकाता पुलिस की जिम्मेदारी संभाली थी, उस वक्त सारदा मामले से जुड़ी जांच के आधार पर सीबीआई ने राजीव के सरकारी आवास पर छापा मारा था, इस घटना के विरोध में मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी धरने पर बैठ गयी थीं, बाद में केंद्रीय जांच एजेंसी ने राजीव को बुलाकर पूछताछ की थी.
इस सारदा जांच में एक समय पर, सीबीआई ने शिलांग में राजीव और कुणाल से आमने-सामने पूछताछ की। पश्चिम बंगाल के 1989 बैच के आईपीएस अधिकारी राजीव ने पुलिस में विभिन्न पदों पर काम किया है। वह एक समय सीआईडी के एडिशनल डीजी भी थे.
